Open Question: How can I convince my sister not to take anti-anxiety pills anymore?

4 December 2008, 4:18 pm

Recently I found out that my little sister, who is 18, started taking anti-anxiety pills about a month ago. I was very upset when I found out because I think that they harm the body more than help, that they are addictive, that the pharmaceutical industry is a bunch of money grubbing bastards and that she really doesn't need them. I know she feels some stress, I'm assuming about school, but I don't think it warrants taking pills. She wont tell me what she is so anxious about either, which worries me. Lastly I'm worried because out dad was addicted to pills for a long time and had to be in rehab to recover. He doesn't agree with it either, but is supportive of her decision. What should I do?! I would rather she smoke pot all the time or something more natural, like acupuncture. Is something going on that she's not saying? more details....she is a senior in high school and I am a sophmore in college. I have been sent to counseling (by parents when in high school) for depression and anxiety. when i get stressed out i get physically sick. i know what anxiety feels like, and I have guesses at what my sister is anxious about (school basically is what i think). i have a hard time understanding this because she only goes to school for three hours and doesn't have a job. i feel like the pills will just mask her problem and make her into a zombie and not herself. i feel like something she should be doing is confronting the problem because the research i have done has shown me that the pills will only cover the problem and when/if she stops taking them the problems will come back the same. thank you so far for all your answers, though they aren't what i want to hear at all i suppose there is nothing i can do but support her decision though i think it is a bad one....except that sarah M person your response was totally useless! write answers when you actually have something worthwhile to say. also....from what i've gathered from my family she is NOT having panic attacks...also there isn't enough research to say that marijuana worsens anxiety, i could argue that it helps because it is prescribed in california for the disorder. i know many people (not just young people old ass people) that would argue that it does help. another thing, i am not arguing against pharmaceutical drugs altogether, because there are ones that do help but when it comes to psychological drugs that's another deal. oh and ps i'm not boy, i'm a girl, my picture wont change. oh well....
